Postpartum Ceremony

The birth of a mother is a significant rite of passage that deserves witnessing and recognition.

Closing the Bones is a traditional postpartum ceremony that is practiced in Central and South America. Similarly, around the world there are many cultures that offer the practice of using cloth to wrap the Mother’s postpartum body with ritual and intention, from Morocco, to Mexico, and to Russia.

This Postpartum Ceremony serves as a container for a mother to be witnessed, celebrated, and held with reverence. To feel cocooned by the Rebozo, her family and/or the women around her; and gives the opportunity to process her expansion as mother.

It can be offered from 6 weeks to 60 years after birth.

Similarly, around the world there are many cultures that offer the practice of using cloth to wrap the Mother’s postpartum body with ritual and intention, from Morocco, to Mexico, and to Russia. Many of the elements of this ritual are similar, with some features of the ceremony unique to each culture.

A Rebozo is a long piece of hand-woven cloth that is used with origins to Mexico. The lineage through which I have learned the art of the Rebozo is from my teacher, Rachelle Garcia Seliga (Innate Traditions).

The ceremony that I offer includes the use the Rebozo, the element of water, massage, warmth, sound, and a period of rest, followed by nourishing food & tea.

During pregnancy, labor, and birth, a mother’s body opens—physically and energetically—as she serves as a channel between worlds. This ceremony is an opportunity to gently close that opening, bringing a sense of completion, integration, and renewal.

  • Physically, the Rebozo wrapping may support the closing of the pelvis and realignment of abdominal muscles and fascia.

  • Emotionally, the ceremony provides a space to be held, witnessed, and honored with deep care.

“Tanya has such a gift for making newborn mamas feel celebrated and nourished. She facilitated the “closing of the bones” ceremony for me this past weekend - but a more appropriate way is to say she created an incredibly beautiful sacred space and facilitated magic ✨ it was such a powerful ceremony for me 💕 this traditional ceremony acknowledges the immense changes that a mother undergoes throughout pregnancy and birth and gently offers closure as the mother returns to her own center and integrates her personal transformation into motherhood.” - Isabel
